GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks snapped their three game losing streak Wednesday night with a 34-7 win over Notre Dame De Namur. During this game Jack Griffin broke multiple school records while the Mavericks 34 goals tied for the second most goals in Division II men's lacrosse history.
Griffins' Record Breaking Game
Griffins' 10 goals and five assists is a school record performance. His 10 goals breaks the school record by two which was previously set in 2017. With his five assists Griffin recorded 15 points and smashed the previous school record of eight points which was set in 2017. Each of those records were previously recorded by former Maverick Steve Brandenburg. Griffin has 149 career points and has moved himself up to No. 2 in the school record book passing former Maverick Calen Ketcham.
Griffins' school record performance put him in the Division II men's lacrosse record book as well. His ten goals is tied for eighth most in DII history while his 15 points is fifth most in DII history.
The Mavericks 34 goals this game breaks their previous record by one goal which was set last year at 33 against Johnson and Wales who is still on the Mavericks schedule set for April 9th.
Other Notable Performances
Senior Michael Marino recorded a season high 13 ground balls and won 17-of-23 faceoffs. He netted his first goal of the season tonight as well. Jacob Yordy who grabbed a career high six ground balls also recorded the first goal of his season in tonight's win.
Tanner Stopkoski and Tanner Watson who are both freshmen each record the first goals of their career. Watson totaled three for the first hat trick of his young Maverick career.
Brandon Wilson also notched three goals for the first hat trick of his season.
As a team the Mavericks totaled 60 ground balls which is a season high and ranks No. 2 in the school record book.
The Mavericks totaled 54 points this game which is tied for sixth most in DII history.
How It Happened
The Mavericks scored in the first minute of action when Joe Wulforst IV recorded his ninth goal of the season. The Mavericks then went on a 5-0 run and led 6-0 with 9:11 left to play in the first quarter. Notre Dame De Namur stopped the run when they connected on their first goal of the game at the 6:18 mark in quarter one. The Mavericks' scored four more to reach a 10-1 lead at the end of 15 minutes. Griffin recorded four goals in this quarter and had a hat trick with 3:39 remaining in the first quarter.
The Mavericks added to their scoring run and totaled five more goals before NDNU hit their second goal of the game at 6:06 in the second quarter. The Mavericks led 18-3 by half.
The Argonauts scored two goals to open up the half, but the Mavericks registered four more to hold a 22-7 lead entering the final quarter.
Griffin recorded four of his goals in the final quarter and netted his record breaking ninth goal of the game with 8:28 remaining when the Mavericks led 30-7. He added to his record and totaled 10 when he netted his 26th goal of the year in the final minute of action to end the game with a 34-7 lead.

The Mavericks will open up RMAC play at Westminster on April 6th in Salt Lake City. The game will take place at Dumke Field at 2pm.
