LONG BEACH, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University Beach Volleyball team took down their second NCAA Division I foe in as many days as they claimed a 3-2 Saturday afternoon win over CSU Bakersfield to wrap up a 2-2 weekend at the Belmont Shore Challenge, hosted by Long Beach State University here at Rosie's Dog Beach.
The Mavericks, now 3-6 on the season, fell to the nation's ninth-ranked hosts earlier in the day, after defeating Nebraska, 3-2 on Friday.
Against the Roadrunners (5-5), the Mavericks won matches in the No. 1, 4 and 5 flights as
Kerstin Layman and
Magdalena Dabrowski clinched the team victory with a 3-set, come-from-behind victory at No. 5. They dropped the opening set to CSUB's Brooke Boiseau and Krista Hernandez by a 22-20 score but rallied for 21-12 and 15-11 wins in the second and third sets.
Meanwhile,
Katie Scherr moved to within one victory of the Maverick school record for career wins as she teamed with
Portia Valadez for a 29-27, 21-18 straight set win over the Roadrunners' No. 1 duo of Mattison Degarmo and Briannah Mariner. Scherr now has 14 career wins to her credit, just one shy of 2018 partner
Taylor Woods.
Ara Norwood and
Holly Schmidt also won at No. 4 against the Roadrunners. They defeated Ally Barber and Rafi Bonifacio for their third win of the season, which equals the Mavericks' other two winning pairs for the team-high.
Ashton Reese and
Jordan Cody also won their No. 6 exhibition match, 21-17, 21-13.
Against Long Beach State, the Mavericks lost all of their matches in straight sets. Norwood and Schmidt fared best, battling to a 21-18, 21-14 decision in their No. 4 match against Kenzie Holtz and Alexis Patterson.
The Mavericks will resume their season on Apr. 13 when they will take on host Utah and Boise State in a tri-dual in Salt Lake City.
