NORTHRIDGE, Calif.— The Colorado Mesa University Beach Volleyball squad began their spring break stint in Southern California on Wednesday dropping a pair of decisions.
The Mavericks, now 1-4 on the year, fell 5-0 in a weather-plagued match against No. 13 Loyola Marymount and then fell 4-1 to tri-dual hosts CSUN.
Against the Matadors,
Katie Scherr and
Portia Valadez claimed a No. 1 flight win over Daniella Molinari and Seyvion Wagoner in straight sets, 21-19, 21-12.
Ara Norwood and
Holly Schmidt also took their No. 4 match to three sets, falling 15-13 in the decider after winning the first set, 21-17. They lost the second set by the same score.
Ashton Reese and
Jordan Cody also went to three sets in their exhibition match, falling 19-21, 21-12, 15-9 to Shawnee De Oliveira and Kathryn Zaloom.
CSUN's other three victories were came in straight sets as they improved to 6-6 with the team win.
In the earlier match against the Lions, the Mavericks were unable to win a set. Scherr and Valdez were the closest but lost to Savannah Salttery and Reka Orsi Toth, 21-15, 21-18 in the No. 1 match.
Emily Tucker and
Hannah Bokal had a reversed score (21-18, 21-15) in their exhibition match setback to Sylvia Hernandez and Paige Panter.
The match against the Lions, now 10-6, lasted four hours and 45 minutes including two weather delays.
The Mavericks will play in the Belmont Shore Challenge on Long Beach on Friday and Saturday. That tournament is hosted by ninth-ranked Long Beach State and will include matches against Nebraska, Washington, Cal State-Bakersfield and the hosts.
