Griffin Leads the Mavs in Win Over No. 15 Lynn

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks men's lacrosse team improved to 3-2 on the season after defeating No. 15 Lynn University Saturday afternoon at a neutral site game at Dumke Field. Six different Mavericks scored and Christian Cherry was awarded the win as goalie making nine saves.

Lynn registered the first goal of the game in the opening period and it wasn't until 9:52 in the second quarter that Colorado Mesa tied the game 1-1 with a goal from Joe Wulforst IV. Lynn quickly answered but the Mavs tied the game 2-2 with a goal from Jack Griffin at the 2:50 mark just before halftime.

The Mavericks came out strong in the third quarter scoring three goals in the first six minutes to hold a 5-3 lead over the Fighting Knights with 9:23 remaining in the third quarter. Ben Austin netted one more goal during the third quarter to extend the Mavericks lead 6-3 entering the final stretch.

Jack Griffin recorded two more goals in the fourth while the Maverick defense only allowed for a pair of goals and the Mavs and Fighting Kights reached a final score of 10-5 in favor of the Mavericks.

Colorado Mesa lost in both face-offs and ground balls. Lynn won 13 of the 19 face-offs and picked up five more ground balls than Mesa collecting 37 total. Austin Bullock led the Mavericks with six ground balls.

The Mavericks are now 4-1 against their last five ranked opponents dating back to last season.  

Next Up

The Mavericks will host Rollins College in their home opener on Wednesday March 13 at 7 pm on Walker Field.
