No. 12 Mavericks Moves to 2-0 after Saturday Win

ST. GEOERGE, Utah – No. 12 Colorado Mesa pounded out 12 hits en route to an 8-3 win over the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks on Saturday morning at Bruce Hurst Field. The Mavericks move to 2-0 on the season while Northwest Nazarene fell to 1-3.
 
The Mavericks plated two runs in the first inning on a pair of RBI singles by sophomores. Jordan Stubbings singled in Hunter Douglas followed by a Matt Turner single that scored Caleb Farmer.
 
Stubbings finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs driven in and a double.
 
The Nighthawks answered with a pair of runs in the top half of the second inning to make it 2-2.
 
Colorado Mesa took the lead in the fourth inning on a sac fly from Farmer that scored Will Dixon on the play to make it 3-2 in favor of the Mavericks.
 
Northwest Nazarene evened the score again in the fifth inning before the Mavericks would tack on three runs for a 6-3 lead after five. Will Dixon scored one on a RBI nubber to the first baseman followed by a two-run single to first base by Josh Shapiro that scored Dominic DeMarco and a hustling Johnny Carr.
 
Taylor Dye earned the win in relief of starter John Beaudrie. Dye (1-0) went two innings and allowed one run on one hit and walked one in two innings of work.
 
Beaudrie made his first appearance since the 2016 season and pitched well. He allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and struck out one in four innings of work (58 pitches).
 
Jett Wodiuk earned his first save of the season after pitching the final three innings of relief. Wodiuk gave up just one hit, walked one and struck out three in his first appearance since 2017.
 
The Mavericks will play game three of the weekend later this evening at 6:30pm against Cal State Los Angeles, weather pending.
