ST. GEORGE, Utah – After starting the game nearly two hours late, the No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball team went into the wee hours of the morning for a 15-10 win over the Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles at Bruce Hurst Field.
The Mavericks scored the first eight runs of the game to jump out to an 8-0 lead after three innings.
The Golden Eagles scored one in the top of the fifth inning but Colorado Mesa answered back with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to build a 12-1 lead.
The lead grew to 15-5 prior to the ninth inning of play. Cal State L.A. scored five runs in the top half of the ninth inning but the rally wasn't enough to overcome the 10 run deficit that started the inning.
AJ Landis earned the start in game three of the weekend and picked up his first win. Landis (1-0) pitched five innings and allowed one run on five hits, walked one and struck out five while throwing 87 pitches.
Caleb Farmer went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two runs driven in while
Tyler Sandoval scored three runs.
Colorado Mesa improves to 3-0 on the season while the Golden Eagles fell to 0-3 on the year.
The Mavericks will conclude the season opening weekend on Sunday with a single game against Cal State Los Angeles beginning at Noon at Bruce Hurst Field.
