ST. GEORGE, Utah – The No. 12 Colorado Mesa baseball team allowed seven runs in the first two innings and gave up a go-ahead two-run home run in an 11-9 loss on Sunday to Cal State Los Angeles at Bruce Hurst Field.
The Golden Eagles benefitted from six walks in those first two innings as they scored their seven runs on just two hits.
Colorado Mesa worked from behind the whole game until they caught Cal State L.A. in the eighth inning at 9-9 after a Matt Turner fielder's choice scored
Tanner Garner from third base.
Cal State L.A. hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the top of the ninth for the 11-9 win.
Caleb Farmer finished the game 2-for-3 with a double, a triple and five runs driven in while Turner and
Jordan Stubbings each finished with two hits.
A pair of freshman made their debuts in relief on Sunday.
Andrew Morris and
Ryan Overboe combined to pitch five and two-thirds innings and allowed just one run on four hits, walked four and struck out two to keep the Mavericks in the ball game.
Colorado Mesa finishes the season-opening weekend 3-1 and will return to the friendly confines of Suplizio Field next weekend for Leadoff Weekend. The Mavericks will take on Montana State Billings beginning on Friday at 2:30pm.
