SALT LAKE CITY, Utah- The Colorado Mesa Mavericks has their seventeen game winning streak snapped Friday night in Salt Lake City by a score of 57-61. The Mavericks record falls to 18-2 and 15-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. With this win Westminster improves to 17-3 and is now even with CMU at 15-1 in RMAC play.
The Mavericks shot 35.5 percent (22-of-62) from the field and 27.6 (5-of-17) from the three-point line. They shot just 50.0 percent from the charity stripe. The Mavericks were led offensively by senior Karina Brandon who recorded her first double-double of the season. She led the Mavs with 20 points and 11 rebounds including five offensive. This is her third career double-double. Jaylyn Duran was the Mavericks second best scorer with 17 points.
Westminster shot 51.1 percent (23-of-45) from the field and 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from the three-point line. From the line the Griffins shot 60.0 percent (9-of-15). Denise Gonzalez recorded 16 points to lead the Griffins.
The Mavericks got out to a slow start and fell behind 2-12 at the 3:23 mark of the first quarter. The Brandon's combined to hit back-to-back baskets that were followed by a three-pointer from Duran to close out the first quarter and put the score at 9-14.
Karina Brandon hit the opening bucket of the second quarter, but the Mavericks and Griffins continued to exchange baskets with the Griffins holding a lead. Starting at the 3:49 mark the Mavericks closed the game on a 10-4 run and got within two points at the break. With a three-pointer from Kylyn Rigsby in the final minute the Mavs found themselves down 27-29 entering the locker room.
Denise Gonzales for the Griffins had a hot start to the third quarter scoring six straight points before Karina Brandon nailed a three-pointer. Unfortunately, the Griffins answered with a three of their own to maintain the lead 38-30. Denise Gonzales scored the final two buckets of the quarter to hold a 47-38 lead entering the final stretch.
During the fourth quarter no team hit back-to-back field goals expect when Kelsey Siemons scored a lay-up that was followed by a Karina Brandon three-pointer to get the Mavericks within three points at 54-57 with under a minute to play.  The Mavericks comeback wasn't enough and they ultimately fell to the Westminster 57-61.
Tomorrow Night
The Mavericks will travel to St. George Utah for a game against Dixie State on Saturday night. This game will tip-off at 5:30 pm. Dixie State defeated Western State 67-56 Friday night in St. George.
