St. George, Utah- The Colorado Mesa Mavericks closed out the weekend with a 72-59 win over Dixie State University on Saturday night in Burns Arena. The Mavs improved to 16-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play and 19-2 overall.
The Mavericks shot 52.9 percent (27-of-51) from the field and 26.3 percent (5-of-19) from the three-point line. As a team they shot 56.5 percent (13-of-23) from the charity stripe. Jaylyn Duran and Sydni Brandon led the Mavericks with 14 points each. Sydni Brandon went to the free throw line the most for the Mavericks and went seven of nine while she was there. She also led the team in rebounds with eight and recorded five steals which ties a career high.
The Trailblazers were led offensively by Ali Franks who recorded 14 points and Morgan Myers who grabbed nine rebounds. As a team Dixie State shot 38.3 percent (18-of-47) from the field and 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from the three point line. They outshot the Mavs from the free throw line going 16-of-25 for 64.0 percentage
The Mavericks got out to a good starts has they hit back-to-back three pointers with just under eight minutes to play. Kylyn Rigsby and Sydni Brandon's treys got the Mavs out to an 8-2 lead. Dixie State answered with 9-4 run and got within one point. Duran hit a basket to extend the lead but the Blazers answered with five straight points to take the lead 16-14. Dixie held a lead until Natalie Bartle subbed in last second and got to the rim to tie game 19-19 after the first quarter. Â Â
The Mavericks started the 9-3 run with four different Mavericks scoring including three off the bench. The Mavericks got out to a 28-22 lead with 7:13 remaining. Dixie State got within three points, but by the end of the second the Mavericks extended their lead by ten and held a 42-32 score entering the locker room.
Starting the third quarter the Mavericks hit five straight points and continued their scoring run. They reach a 57-39 score with 2:57 remaining in the third quarter to give themselves their largest lead of the game at 18 points. Dixie hit some free throws to reach a score of 57-41 at the end of third quarter.
Dixie did not lose hope at surviving the number one team in the RMAC and got their deficit down to ten at the 5:46 mark, 62-52. The Mavericks stepped up to the free throw line and made 6-of-8 free throws to secure their sixteenth win in the RMAC season. By the end of forty minutes the Mavericks outscored the Trailblazers 72-59.
Next Weekend
Colorado Mesa will continue to stay on the road as they face Colorado Christian and Regis University on Feb 15 and 16. The Mavericks defeated both of these teams earlier in the season at Brownson Arena. Friday's game against Colorado Christian will be held at the Event Center at 5 pm. The following night the Mavericks will go to Regis Fieldhouse for a game at 5:30 pm.
