ST. GEORGE, Utah— Kaila Jacobi and
Brooke Doumer both hit, 2-out 2-run home runs while
Kimbri Herring pitched a 3-hit shutout, the 12th of her career, as the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks scored in four straight innings to post a 6-0 softball win over Central Washington University in their first game of the day and their second of the Dixie State Courtyard Classic here at the Canyons Softball Complex on Friday afternoon.
The Mavericks are now 2-0 on the young season heading into a Friday evening encounter against Western Washington.
Central Washington fell to 5-2 after picking up an 8-5 win over Fort Lewis earlier in the day.
The Mavericks, scored five of their six runs with two outs. The first two came in the bottom of the third when
AnnMarie Torres reached on what proved to be a costly error before Jacobi hit her homer just two pitches later to give the Mavericks the early lead. They also generated their fourth inning runs with two outs as
Hailey Hinson singled up the middle to begin the rally before stealing second and then coming across on Doumer's homer to center.
Jacobi would then record her third RBI of the game and the sixth of the weekend in the bottom of the fifth, plating
Kellie Mrofcza, who had doubled to left to begin the inning before moving to third on a Torres groundout.
The Mavs then tacked on an insurance run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth as Doumer singled before moving to second on a pinch-hit single by
Lexie Comer and to third on a wild pitch. She then scored on a Wildcat error just moments later.
Meanwhile, Herring was in control retiring nine straight hitters while getting a double play to erase a 1-out, fourth-inning walk. She then set the Wildcats down in order in the top of the fifth and gave up just one hit in the sixth and another in the seventh and was able to recover from two Maverick defensive miscues to strike out pinch-hitter Gracee Dwyer for the final out.
Herring had five strike outs overall and walked just one.
Jacobi and Doumer both went 2-for-3 to lead the Maverick attack, which pounded out seven hits while taking advantage of four errors.
