TUCSON, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University Beach Volleyball team picked up a 3-2 win over Benedictine University at Mesa to highlight what was a 1-2 at the Cactus Classic, the Mavs' first tournament of the season on Saturday here at the University of Arizona's Bear Down Beach.
Earlier, the Mavericks fell 5-0 to the host and 14
th-ranked Wildcats and by the same score to Boise State.
In the final match against the Redhawks, the Mavs' received wins in the No. 1, 3 and 5 flights as
Magdalena Dabrowski and
Kerstin Layman delivered the clincher with a 21-18, 21-19 win over Pakalana Helekahi and Savannah Cano at No. 5.
Katie Scherr and
Portia Valadez had earlier won 21-19, 21-15 at No. 1 while
Lindy Dixon and
Hailey Crane claimed a 3-set (16-21, 21-17, 15-11) win at No. 3.
Both of those Maverick pairs had also taken their Boise State opponents to three sets.
Against the Wildcats,
Ara Norwood and
Holly Schmidt were the closest to victory in the match against Arizona.
The Mavericks are now off until Mar. 20, when they begin a 6-match spring break road trip to southern California.
