GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Sophomore
Chase Hamilton hit a walk-off single to right field in the bottom of the 12
th inning to give No. 12 Colorado Mesa the 8-7 extra inning win over the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets at frigid Suplizio Field on Saturday afternoon.
In the 12
th inning,
Spencer Bramwell got things going with a groundball single up the middle to give Colorado Mesa a baserunner.
Johnny Carr followed that with a single to right field to give the Mavericks runners at first and second with one out. A wild pitch moved both runners up, forcing the Yellowjackets to intentionally walk
Hunter Douglas to load the bases. An infield fly by
Caleb Farmer led to the heroics of
Chase Hamilton.
The Mavericks were on the brink of dropping the game in the ninth inning before
Jordan Stubbings walked with one out.
Dominic DeMarco stepped to the plate and hit a towering, two-run dinger to tie the game at 7-7. The homer was the second for DeMarco in two games this weekend.
The Yellowjackets opened the game by scoring four runs in the second inning before the Mavericks answered back in the third inning with a pair of runs. Farmer hit a RBI double to right field and
Jordan Stubbings hit an RBI single to center field to make it 4-2 after three innings.
MSU Billings' Matt Dillon hit the first of his two home runs in the top of the fifth inning to add to the Yellowjackets' lead and make the score 5-2.
Senior
Tyler Sandoval got one back in the bottom of the sixth inning on a RBI single that scored DeMarco to make it 5-3 in favor of MSU Billings.
Colorado Mesa evened the score in the seventh inning after a
Hunter Douglas RBI single that scored
Johnny Carr then later in the inning Douglas came around to score the game-tying run on a passed ball.
Montana State Billings scored a pair of runs in the in the eighth that included Dillon's second home run of the game giving the Yellowjackets a 7-5 lead before DeMarco's game-tying homer in the ninth.
Senior
AJ Landis got his second start on Saturday and went five innings and allowed five runs on 10 hits, walked two and struck out two in 85 pitches. The Las Vegas, Nev. native didn't factor into the decision.
After freshman
Andrew Morris threw three innings of relief, enter senior
Will Dixon. Dixon was outstanding in relief as he pitched the final four innings of the game and didn't allow a hit. He walked one and struck out eight in 61 pitches to earn the win.
MSU Billings' Will Heward was tagged with the loss after tossing the final 3.2 innings.
The Mavericks improved to 5-1 on the season while the Yellowjackets fell to 0-2 on the year.
Colorado Mesa and Montana State Billings will close out the series with a nine-inning and seven-inning doubleheader beginning at 12pm (noon) at Suplizio Field.
