Mavs Extend Win Streak to Five

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks (7-2, 3-0) defeated MSU Denver (3-6, 2-1), 70-61 Friday night inside Brownson Arena to remain undefeated in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play and extend their win streak to five games.

The Mavericks 28-7 first quarter performance was enough to hold off the Roadrunners who outscored the Mavs in the remainder of the quarters.

Sydni Brandon neared a triple-double with nine point, eight rebounds, and a season high eight assists. Daniella Turner led the Mavericks for the third consecutive game and recorded a game high 23 points. She was 10-of-15 from the field and 3-of-4 from the three-point line. Sierra McNicol was one rebound shy of her second career double-double. The South Jordan, Utah native recorded nine rebounds and 12 points, tying her season high in points.

By the media timeout of the first quarter the Mavs held a 11-2 lead. The Roadrunners did not score again until there was 2:18 remaining when the Mavericks held a 22-3 lead. The Mavericks were outscored 16-15 in the second quarter, but still held a 43-23 lead entering the second half.

The Mavericks scored five straight point coming out of the locker room to begin the third quarter. Beginning at the 5:57 tick the Roadrunners outscored the Mavs 18-5  to close out the third quarter and cut their deficit to 12, 53-41.

The Roadrunner had their best scoring performance in the final quarter and recorded 20 points at a 60.0 percent clip from the field but never cut the Mavs lead to under double digits until under a minute to play when Morgan Lewis hit a three pointer to settle the game 70-61 in favor of the Mavericks.

The Roadrunner were led by Bree Wellington who recorded 15 points.

The Mavericks will host Chadron State (3-9, 1-2 RMAC) Saturday night at 5:30 pm. The Eagles lost to Western Colorado 69-43 Friday night in Gunnison, Colo.
