Mavs Remain Undefeated in RMAC after 73-41 Win

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -  The Colorado Mesa Maverick Women's Basketball team (8-2, 4-0 RMAC) defeated Chadron State (3-10, 1-3 RMAC) Saturday night inside Brownson Arena behind a lockdown defensive effort from the Mavs. Led by Sydni Brandon who recorded five steals the Mavericks stole the ball 11 times and blocked eight shots.

To add to her line, Brandon recorded a season high nine assists along with ten rebounds and zero turnovers as the Mavericks' point guard.

The Mavericks added to their defense on the offensive end and recorded their best shooting performance of the RMAC season from the field. As a team the Mavs shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the field and 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from the three-point line. 

Daniella Turner recorded over 20 points for the fourth consecutive night and led the Mavericks in scoring for the fifth time this season. The Boca Raton, Fla. native has led the Mavs in each of their conference games. Tonight, Turner was 9-of-18 from the field and recorded 21 points.

The Mavericks knocked down seven three-pointers, five of which were recorded by Kelsey Siemons who was 71.4 percent (5-of-7) from beyond the arc. Those five made threes mark a season high for the Tucson, Ariz. native

As the number one defense in the nation the Mavericks limited the Eagles to 27.7 percent (13-of-47) from the field and 23.1 (3-of-13) percent from the three-point line. The Mavericks outscored the Eagles in each quarter and limited them to under ten points in the first and fourth quarters.

The Mavericks scored the first basket of the game and jumped out to an 11-2 lead by the media timeout of the first quarter. In that run five different Mavericks scored. Out of the media time out Turner recorded seven points and led the Mavs to a 21-9 lead after the first quarter.

Siemons recorded three treys in the second quarter to help extend the Mavericks lead 39-21 at the half.

The Eagles had their best quarter out of the locker room and shot 40.0 percent from the field recording 12 points, but were outscored by the Mavs who recorded 19 points. The Mavericks were ahead 57-33 by the end of the third.

The Mavericks saw their largest lead of the game with 1:55 remaining when they held a 72-38 advantage.

The Mavericks recorded 36 of their 73 total points in the paint against the Eagles and forced Chadron into 11 turnovers.

The Mavericks will wrap up their 2019 portion of the schedule against Western Colorado on Friday December 20 at 5:30 pm. The Mavericks will continue RMAC play after the New Year on Jan 3 and 4 on the road against South Dakota School of Mines and Black Hills State, respectively.
