Mavericks Dominate Cameron in Season Opener

STEPHENSVILLE, Texas – Led by a career high 20 points from Daniella Turner, the Colorado Mesa University Women's Basketball team dominated Cameron University 87-49 Friday afternoon inside Wisdom Gym.

Along with Turner, three other Mavericks scored in double-digits as the team shot 51.9 percent from the field. Sydni Brandon scored ten points (2-of-3 FG) with six of her points coming from the free throw line and dishes out a team high four assists.

Kylyn Rigsby recorded 14 points (4-of-11 FG) and Kelsey Siemons was good for 17 points (5-of-9 FG) which included a team high three three-pointers.

Cameron University had no player in double-digits, shot 28.6 percent from the field, and was 0-for-10 from the three-point line.  

The Mavericks started the season off with a hot start and led 21-6 after the first quarter. In that opening quarter, Rigsby scored nearly half of the Maverick's points and recorded nine points. The Mavericks extended their lead to as much as 20 points with 4:02 remaining in the second quarter after Morgan Myers made a layup to put the Mavericks ahead 33-13. In that second quarter Cameron shot a game low 31.25 percent and found themselves down 37-18 entering halftime.

The Mavericks kept up the scoring and recorded 26 points in the third quarter. They did not let up the remainder of the game as they reached their largest lead of the game in the final minute of action after Noortje Joosten scored the final basket to settle the score at 87-49.

This was the most points scored by a Maverick team in a season opener since 2010 when the Mavericks defeated Colorado College 89-39.
