STEPHENVILLE, Texas - The Colorado Mesa Maverick Women's Basketball team (1-1) fell to the Tarleton Texans (2-0) by a score of 57-53 Saturday afternoon in the Mavs' final game of the Texan Tip-Off Classic inside Wisdom Gymnasium.
Kelsey Siemons scored a three-pointer with under three minutes to play that got the Mavericks within one point, 49-48, but a couple of Maverick turnovers and empty three-pointers sealed the win for the Texans who went 6-of-8 from the charity strip down the stretch.
The Mavericks forced Tarleton to commit 30 turnovers but shot 33.9 percent (20-of-59) from the field and 21 percent (4-of-19) from beyond the arc in today's contest. The Texans were led by Hailey Mackenzie who recorded a double-double with 13 rebounds and 20 points.
Neither team shot exceptionally well in this game as the Texans were just 37.2 percent (16-of-43) from the field, but a solid 44.4 percent (4-of-9) from the three-point line.
The Mavericks suffered a slow start to begin the game and did not score until the 5:44 mark in the first quarter when a layup by Tori Catlett made the score 9-2. The Texans reached their largest lead of the game with two minutes to play in the first quarter when they held a 19-5 lead.
After that the Mavericks battled back and outscored the Texans 18-13 in the second quarter. They entered the locker room down only four points, 32-28. In that quarter Morgan Myers scored five straight points while Catlett and Siemons each scored in the final minute.
The Mavericks came out of the locker room and scored the opening five points of the third quarter to gain their first lead of the game, 33-32, with 7:33 reaming. The Texans outscored the Mavs 11-2 after that and held a 43-35 lead entering the final quarter.
The Mavericks took a one point lead with six minutes remaining in the final quarter but could not maintain that lead throughout the remainder of the game. Siemons got the Mavericks back within one point, 49-48 with three minutes to play, by knocking down her third three-pointer of the game, but the Mavericks went 1-of-6 from the field after that and committed two turnovers which allowed the Texans to secure their second win of the season.

The Mavericks will face Saint Martin's University and Northwest Nazarene University in two weeks as a part of the Dixie State Tournament in St. George, Utah at the Burns Arena. The Mavs will play Saint Martin's on Nov 22 at 3 pm and Northwest Nazarene on Nov 23 at 1 pm.
