Mavericks Stunned by Fort Lewis in Quarterfinals

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 3 seeded Colorado Mesa University men's soccer team (10-5-3, 8-3-3 RMAC) lost to the No. 6 seeded Fort Lewis Skyhawks (11-4-4, 7-4-2 RMAC) Thursday afternoon at Walker Field in a quarterfinals match of the 2019 RMAC Tournament.

The Mavericks took 17 of their season high 24 shots in the second half to try to come back after giving up a goal in the 30th minute of the game to the Skyhawks' leading scorer Loic Jean-Baptiste. His goal came shortly after a CMU offside call.

The Mavericks committed four offside violations throughout the entire 90 minutes. Two of their off side calls were made in the second half and resulted in goals that were called off by the referee due to the violation.

A red card was issued to Ty Lang of Fort Lewis in the 76th minute, which forced the Skyhawks to play a man-down the remainder of match. In that time the Mavericks took seven shots and forced Peter Byrne to make three of his game high seven saves to keep the Mavs scoreless.

Lawan Abary and Niall Shaffery accounted for 13 of the team's 24 shots. Abary put two shots on target while Ramses Atahualpa recorded a career high three shots on goal from his three total shots taken.

The Mavericks season concludes with a 10-5-3 overall record.
