ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Dixie State Trailblazers scored 35 second half points en route to a 42-32 win over Colorado Mesa in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference football action at Trailblazer Stadium.
For the second straight week, the Colorado Mesa special teams scored a touchdown.
Nick Ciccio blocked a Trailblazer punt and
Justin White scooped up the ball and scampered 12-yards for the touchdown.
Quarterback
Hayden Bollinger followed that up with the first of his two first-half touchdown runs, this one from 9-yards out to make it 14-0 Mavericks.
He added his second with 3:26 to play in the half from just 2-yards out to make it 21-7 heading into the halftime break. Bollinger ended the game with 11 carries for 19 net yards on the ground.
The Trailblazers responded with 21 unanswered points to start the second half to take a 28-21 lead into the fourth quarter.
With 10:30 to play, Colorado Mesa cut the lead to 28-24 after a
Blake Moore 27-yard field goal.
Dixie State extended the lead back out to 11 after a Sei-J Lauago 81-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage on their next drive.
Colorado Mesa continued to answer.
Bradley Toussaint hauled in a 21-yard touchdown, barely keeping his feet in on the near sideline to keep it close at 35-32.
Dixie State iced the game after a 12-play, 87-yard drive that chewed up over five minutes of clock time that resulted in a touchdown with just 1:59 to play.
The Trailblazers finished the game with 323 yards on the ground and 591 total yards in the game while the Mavericks had 181 yards rushing and 104 yards through the air.
Sophomore running back
Isaac Maestas finished with 112 yards rushing on 23 carries. It was his third game of the season with over 100-yards rushing.
Nic Smith led the Maverick defense with nine tackles while
Devante Loggins intercepted his first pass of the season.
The Mavericks fall to 4-5 on the season and 4-4 in the RMAC while Dixie State improves to 7-2, 6-2 in the conference.
Colorado Mesa will be on the road for the final time this season when they head to the San Luis Valley for a showdown with Adams State. The Grizzlies hosted nationally-ranked Angelo State on Saturday and fell 41-21.
