SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks shutout Black Hills State 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Ronnie Theisz Field and improved to 2-3-1 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play and 5-4-1 overall. Alexis Allard and Lexi Newton each recorded goals in the second half to secure the Mavericks fifth win of the season. This match marks the Mavericks second shutout of the season.
The Mavericks defense led limited the Yellow Jackets to zero shots in the first half and only three shots in the second half. Kamrie Gunderson recorded one save this match as BHSU only took one shot on goal that occurred during the second half.
Just after the second half started Allard recorded her second goal of the season off a cross pass from Ryanne Parker who assisted her third goal of the season. Following that goal Lexi Newton scored her second goal of the season during the 52nd minute. The sophomore Grand Junction native now has five career goals.
The Mavericks outshot the Yellow Jackets 17-8 on Sunday and totaled eight shots on goal. Newton led the team with two shots on goal. Freshman Bobbie Golik took a career high five shots in today contest.
The Mavericks will return home next weekend for one match against Western on Sunday at 1 pm on Walker Field.
