#13 Mines Too Much For Colorado Mesa

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The 13th-ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers racked up 595 yards of total offense in a 56-20 win over the Colorado Mesa Mavericks on Saturday afternoon at Stocker Stadium in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.

With the win, Mines (5-0, 5-0 RMAC) reclaims the Nyikos Cup, named after longtime supporter of both schools Michael Nyikos, for the second straight season.

Colorado Mesa (2-3, 2-2 RMAC) fell behind 28-0 before they got on the board for the first time in the second quarter. Christopher Brown scored his first touchdown of the season after hauling in a pass from Aaron Howard for the 38-yard score.

Brown broke out for the first time this season with three catches for 46 yards and the score in his third game of the season.

The Mavericks scored later in the second quarter as Howard found Trevon Lambert for his first touchdown of the season to make it 35-14 just before halftime.

Aaron Howard hooked up with KJ Sapp for the lone score of the third quarter by either team. Sapp hauled in a 1-yard TD pass for the score. The sophomore finished with a team-high five catches for 64 yards and the score.

Howard replaced a banged up Hayden Bollinger late in the first quarter and finished 12-of-29 with 146 yards and three touchdowns.

Colorado Mesa was limited to 188 total yards on the day.

Freshman Justin White continues to impress on defense and in special teams. White picked off a John Matocha late in the second quarter for his second pick in as many weeks. He also returned a pair of kickoffs for a total of 99-yards, over a 49-yard average.

Senior Mason Newton led the Maverick defense with eight tackles including a pair of sacks and a quarterback hurry.

Mines' Harlon Hill hopeful running back Cameron Mayberry finished with 192 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries.

The Mavericks will remain at home next week to take on the Fort Lewis Skyhawks at 7pm at Stocker Stadium. The Skyhawks were 28-9 winners at home against Adams State on Saturday and will enter the contest with a 3-2 record.
