DURANGO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Maverick women's soccer team (8-6-1, 5-5-1 RMAC) fell to Fort Lewis College (5-6-3, 4-4-3 RMAC) 3-2 Sunday afternoon in an overtime game on Dirks Field. The Mavericks were ahead by one goal with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, but gave up a goal in the final minute which tied the game and sent the match into overtime allowing FLC to net the game winning goal.
This was the Mavericks third overtime game of the season and their second overtime loss of the year.
The Skyhawks got off to a quick start scoring in the opening minute of the match. It wasn't until the second half when Alexis Allard netted back-to-back goals to give the Mavericks a lead with ten minutes to play.
Her first goal came in the 49th minute and was assisted by Zoe Peterson. Her second goal was not until the 81st minute and was assisted by Bobbie Golik. Allard now leads the team with five goals.
The Skyhawk's Courtney Wambolt sent the game into overtime netting a goal with less than one minute to play in regulation. Six minutes into overtime Ashely Strader ended the match with a game-winning goal.
Kamrie Gunderson played every minute in the net for the Mavericks and recorded two saves.
The Mavericks will return home to Walker Field next weekend for the final games of the regular season. They will face Dixie State at 4 pm on Friday Nov 1 and Westminster on Nov 3 at 11 am. Sunday's game will be the first half of a Maverick double header as the Colorado Mesa men's team will take on Adams State at 1:30 pm on Walker Field.
Both the mens and women's programs will honor this year seniors on Sunday Nov 3.
The 2019 Women's Soccer RMAC Tournament will begin on Nov 8 and feature the conference's top eight teams and will be hosted by the No. 1 seed.
