PUEBLO, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa football team dropped their first road game of the season to the 15
th-ranked CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves 44-28 on Saturday at Ed and Neta DeRose ThunderBowl in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.
The ThunderWolves raced out to a 31-0 lead before the Mavericks first score of the game that came with 23 seconds left in the first half. Sophomore
Isaac Maestas scored from just a yard out to make it 31-6 as the point after failed.
Maestas finished the game with 68 yards on 18 carries.
After a CSU-Pueblo touchdown to open the third quarter, Colorado Mesa rattled off 16 unanswered points to cut the lead to 38-22 with 20 seconds left in the third quarter.
Senior
Peter Anderson caught a 55-yard touchdown pass from
Hayden Bollinger with 5:50 remaining followed by a
Lucas Ruiz-Diaz field goal just 47 seconds later as the ThunderWolves botched the kick return and turned it over to the Mavericks.
Anderson finished with three catches for 83 yards.
Trevon Lambert capped the scoring string with a 3-yard touchdown catch from Bollinger. Lambert ran a short-slant on the play and muscled the ball away from the defender for the score.
The ThunderWolves scored a pair of touchdowns to regain the large lead.
CSU-Pueblo gave the Mavericks opportunities by fumbling six times and losing two of those. With 7:46 left in the first quarter, the Mavericks picked up a fumble at the CSUP 13-yard line but came away without points.
The ThunderWolves rushed for a season-high 354 yards and tied a season-high with five rushing touchdowns in the game. The Pack had 10 different ball carriers with DJ Penick leading all ball carriers with 105 yards a two touchdowns.
Darian Turner led Colorado Mesa in tackles with 12 while
Mason Newton recorded the lone sack for the Mavericks.
The Maverick defense limited the ThunderWolves to 2-of-11 on third down and committed just four penalties to CSUP's nine.
Colorado Mesa falls to 3-4 on the season and 3-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while CSU-Pueblo improves to 6-1 on the year and 5-1 in the conference.
The Mavericks will return next home next week for their homecoming game against Black Hills State at 1pm at Stocker Stadium. The Yellow Jackets will head to Grand Junction coming off a road loss to New Mexico Highlands 17-13 this afternoon.
