Mavericks Dominate Cowgirls 6-0

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Led by Taylor Jones, the Colorado Mesa Mavericks (7-4-1, 5-3-1 RMAC) dominated the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls (0-10-0, 0-8-0 RMAC) 6-0 on Friday night at Walker Field. Five different Mavericks recorded goals including two from Jones. Each of the Mavericks' six goals were assisted and the team outshot the Cowgirls 24-3.

Freshman Mikayla Eccher and Tallin Nieman each recorded their first career goals in tonight's victory.

This game marks the Mavericks fourth shutout of the season.

Zoe Peterson scored the opening goal of the match in the 12th minute and was assisted by Grand Junction native, Lexi Newton. This goal was Peterson's third of the season and ninth of her career. Later on in the first half Devyn Parson perfectly pitched the ball over the head of the Cowgirls and in a spot where Kristen Capan was left with a one-on-one opportunity against the goalkeeper where she netted her second goal of the year.

The Mavericks led 2-0 entering the locker room and did not let up in the second half. Jones, a native of Albuquerque, N.M., recorded back-to-back goals within ten minutes of each other to begin the second half. Ryanne Parker was awarded the assists on each goal.

The last time a Maverick recorded two goals in a game was back on October 22, 2017 when Peterson and Alexis Allard each netted two goals. That game was also against the Cowgirls.

The freshman closed out the scoring run recording goals in the 76th and 87th minute. Eccher was the first of the two to find the back of the net and was then followed by fellow freshmen Nieman.

Throughout this game, the Mavericks totaled 17 points as a team (6 goals, 6 assists) which ranks No. 7 in the record book for most point's by a team in a game.

The last time the Mavericks recorded six goals in a game was on October 30, 2016 when they shutout the Yellow Jackets of Black Hills State University.
