GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Colorado Mesa Mavericks (10-1, 7-0) remain perfect in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after defeating No. 19 Black Hills State University 72-48. This was the Mavs first ranked opponent this season. As a team the Mavs knocked down 14 three-pointers which ties a season high.
Jaylyn Duran knocked down a school record nine three-pointers in only 13 attempts for a three-point shooting percentage of 69.2%. She passed former Maverick Hannah Breidel who made eight three-pointers in a game against Adams State in 2009. As a team the Mavericks shot a season high 51.9% from three-point land with five different Mavericks hitting three-point shots.
With this performance Duran puts herself in the RMAC record book at No. 3 along with four other RMAC players who have hit nine three-pointers in a single game. She is the first RMAC player to do so since 2010.
The Mavericks defense limited the Yellow Jackets to just 48 points which ties a season low for a team who averages 68.3 points per game.
Game in Rewind
The Mavericks started their usual five starters which were Sydni Brandon, Jaylyn Duran, Kylyn Rigsby, Karina Brandon, and Kelsey Siemons. Combined the five starters scored 61 points. The Mavericks were led by Duran who recorded a game high 31 points which was one point shy of her career high 32 points. This is her third game this season with 30 or more points.
The only time the Mavericks were down to the Yellow Jackets was in the opening plays when they led 5-4 at 7:16 in the first quarter. After this the Mavericks went on a 9-0 run and extended their lead 13-5 with 5:22 remaining in the first quarter. During this run Duran hit two three-pointers. The Mavs led 17-9 after the first ten minutes and never lost a quarter throughout the remainder of the game.
Duran hit the first basket of the second quarter which was a three-pointer. She was followed by Kylyn Rigsby who knocked down a three-pointer of her own. Duran followed with five straight points and extended their lead 28-16 with 5:21 remaining in the first half. The Mavericks closed out the first half with a 33-20 lead.
The Mavericks scored 23 points in the third quarter which was theirs best scoring quarter of the night. They shot an impressive 62.5% (5-of-8) from three-point range and make nine field goals out of 19 attempts for a field goal shooting percentage of 47.4% during this ten minute span.
Karina Brandon made three of her game total five field goals during the fourth quarter as the Mavericks closed out the game shooting 53.8% from the field and limited the Yellow Jackets to 27.3% (3-of-11) in the final quarter.
Game by the Numbers
The Mavericks shot 49.1% (28-of-57) from the field and 51.9% (14-of-27) from three-point land. They limited the Yellow Jackets to 36.7% (18-of-49) field goal shooting and 37.5% (6-of-16) from three-point range. BHSU leads the RMAC in three-point shooting percentage at 40.1%.

The Colorado Mesa Mavericks are only one of two teams to remain perfect in the RMAC along with Westminster.
Mavs Hitting the Road
The Mavericks will travel to New Mexico Highlands and CSU Pueblo next weekend. First they will travel to Las Vegas, NV for a game at 5 pm on Jan 11. The next day they will face in state foe CSU Pueblo at 5:30 pm on Jan 12.
