Las Vegas, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks won big over the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands University Friday night in a RMAC contest, 79-50. The Mavericks are on a ten game win streak and improve to 11-1 while remaining perfect in RMAC play at 8-0.
The Mavericks had three scorers in double-digits including Kylyn Rigsby (18), Jaylyn Duran (17), and Karina Brandon (10). Sydni Brandon led the Mavericks from the point guard position and dished out a career high 11 assists. Karina Brandon cleaned up the boards with a team leading eight rebounds.
Review of Mavericks vs. Cowgirls
Rigsby got the Mavericks offense rolling by scoring the first points of the game putting the Mavs offense on a 12-2 run that lasted until the 4:01 mark. During this span the Mavericks hit two three-pointers from both Sydni Brandon and Kelsey Siemons. The Mavericks led early after the first ten minutes, 17-12.
The Cowgirls struggled to answer back during the second quarter and never came within five points of the Mavericks. During this ten minute span the Mavs made eight field goals (8-of-18). The two teams had their closest quarter in the second but the Mavericks managed to outscore the Cowgirls 17-14. Entering the locker room the Mavericks led 34-26.
In the third quarter the Mavericks expanded their lead by starting on a 5-2 run that lasted until the 6:35 mark. Tori Catlett answered a pair of Cowgirl free throws with a layup and Kylyn Rigsby hit her first three pointer of the game. Rigsby finished with a career high three three-point field goals. New Mexico Highlands went on a 6-0 run and came within eight points 49-41 at the 1:48 mark. Duran followed with a jumper and Natalie Bartle knocked down two free-throws to put the Mavericks up 53-41 entering the fourth quarter.
The Mavericks were hot shooters during the final quarter as they knocked down four straight three-pointers. Jaylyn Duran knocked down a three-pointer at the 6:26 mark and followed it up with another a few minutes later. Rigsby joined the party by knocking down back-to-back three-pointers of her own. Sydni Brandon assisted on three of the four shots and had a career night from the point guard position with 11 assists. The Mavericks cleared the bench and continued to score closing the game on a 4-0 run for a final score of 79-50.
Tomorrow Night's Game
The Mavericks will travel to Pueblo, Colo. and face CSU Pueblo tomorrow night. The Thunderwolves are coming off a 62-71 loss given to them by Western State. The game will tipoff at 5:30 pm.
