No. 20 Mavericks Remain Undefeated in RMAC Play

Mavericks extend win streak to 15 games

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – In a battle of undefeated RMAC teams the Colorado Mesa Mavericks defeated Westminster 57-49 on Saturday night in Brownson Arena in front of 1,120 fans to become the only remaining undefeated team in conference. The Mavericks improved to 15-1 and 13-0 in conference while the Griffins fell to 14-3 and 12-1 in conference.

The Mavericks were led by Kylyn Rigsby who recorded 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. Sydni Brandon followed with 15 points and six rebounds. Kelsey Siemons led the Mavs in rebounding with seven. As a team the Mavericks shot 35.5 percent (19-of-53) from the field and a season low 18.2 percent (4-of-22) from the three-point line.

The Griffins were led by Denise Gonzalez who scored 15 points and three assists. Hunter Krebs cleaned up the boards for the Griffins leading the game with eight rebounds. As a team they shot 41.9 percent (18-of-43) from the field and 29.4 percent (8-of-11) from the three-point line.

There were ten lead changes and seven ties throughout the game. The Mavericks scored 15 points off of turnovers while the Griffins scored seven. This eight point margin matched the Mavericks eight point margin win.

The first field goal of the game was not scored until four minutes into the first quarter when Sydni Brandon made a layup to put the Mavericks up 3-0. After the first media timeout, the game settled down and the Griffins led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Kylyn Rigsby made a jump shot followed by free-throws from Katrina Chandler to take the lead 16-15 with 8:29 remaining in the second quarter. The Griffins quickly took the lead back and held onto it the remainder of the quarter to reach a halftime score of 23-26 in favor of the Griffins.

Coming out of the locker room Sydni Brandon and Rigsby scored every point for the Mavs to reach a 32-32 tied game at the first media timeout. The game tied two more times but the Mavericks were till behind at the end of the third quarter, 37-40.

To start the fourth quarter Jaylyn Duran knocked down a three-pointer which was followed up by a steal and a layup from Rigsby to take the lead 43-42 with 7:38 remaining in the game. The Griffins quickly took the lead back, but Rigsby answered for the Mavericks and again gained the lead where they would stay throughout the remainder of the game. After the media timeout the Mavericks closed the game on a 12-5 run to reach a final score of 57-49.

Next Up

The Mavericks will continue RMAC play next weekend in Brownson Arena on Feb 1 and 2 against Regis and Colorado Christian, respectively.  The game on Friday will take place at 3:30 pm followed by the Men's game at 5:30.
