GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks (17-1, 14-0) picked up their sixteenth consecutive win over the Regis Rangers by a score of 56-46. With this win the Mavs remain perfect in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match ups. Eight different Mavericks scored in this afternoon's victory which took place in Brownson Arena.
The Mavs shot 40.0 percent (22-of-55) from the field and 23.0 percent (5-of-21) from the three-point line. From the charity stripe the Mavs shot 77.8 percent (7-of-9). Jaylyn Duran led the Mavericks in scoring for the thirteenth time this season as she recorded 22 points (9-of-19) and drained three three-pointers. Kylyn Rigsby was the Mavs second leading scorer with 11 points (4-of-12). She grabbed down a four rebounds and dished out two assists along the way.
The Rangers shot 30.6 percent (15-of-49) from the field and 28.0 percent (7-of-25) from three-point land. As a team they shot 75.0 percent (9-of-12) from the free throw line. The Mavericks limited the Rangers to a season low 46 points. The Rangers were led by Whitney Jacobs who recorded 15 points (6-of-14) and Majestie Robinson who scored 12 points (4-of-13).
Game in Rewind
Both teams got off to a sloppy start but the Mavs were the first to score a field goal which occurred at the 5:02 mark of the first quarter. With that layup Tori Catlett tied the game 2-2 at the first media timeout of the game. During the first quarter there were three ties and one lead change, but the Mavs held a 8-6 lead over the Rangers after the first ten minutes. The Mavericks held the Rangers to just 18.2 percent shooting during that span.
Regis took the lead back to begin the second quarter and went on an 8-2 run and gained a 14-10 lead with 7:17 remaining in quarter two. At this point head coach Taylor Wagner rotated subs and off the bench Daniella Turner scored the next four points for the Mavericks to get them within two points. The Mavericks trailed by seven during the final minutes of this quarter but closed the quarter with a quick five points from Rigsby and Duran to only be down 23-25 at halftime.
The Mavericks had their best quarter coming out of the locker room. They outscored the Rangers 21-6 during this ten minute span and went on a 14-1 scoring run starting at the 5:05 mark to reach a 44-31 lead entering the final quarter of the game.
Rigsby and Duran hit back-to-back treys to open up the fourth quarter and gave the Mavs their largest lead of the game 49-33 with 8:04 remaining. Regis answered with an 8-2 run to get within ten points of the Mavericks with just under five minutes remaining, but the Mavericks held off their run and the game reached a final score of 56-46.
