Defensive Effort Extends Maverick’s Win Streak

McNicol recorded her first career double-double and Siemons had career night 20 points

Grand Junction, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks (15-1, 12-0) picked up their fourteenth straight win in a 65-42 defeat over Dixie State (9-7, 5-7). Sierra McNicol and Kelsey Siemons had career nights to help the Mavericks remain undefeated in conference play at 12-0.

McNicol recorded the first double-double of her career posting 10 points (5-of-8 FG) and grabbing a game high 12 rebounds. Siemons recorded a career high 20 points (7-of-11 FG) and knocked down a career high six three-pointers. Jaylyn Duran added 17 points to the Maverick's offense and Sydni Brandon led the team with five assists.

The Mavericks shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the field and 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from the three-point line. Their defense limited the Trailblazers to just 26.9 percent (14-of-52) from the field including a 0.00 shooting percentage during the second quarter. This was the lowest scoring game for the Trailblazers this season.

The Mavericks out rebounded the Trailblazers 41-26 and recorded 12 more assists than them.

Duran hit a three-pointer to start the game but was answered by a quick two from Dixie State. Siemons hit back-to-back shots and Duran followed with a three-pointer to put the Mavericks up 14-5 with 3:25 remaining in quarter one. After this the Mavericks were outscored 4-10 to reach a score of 18-15 at the end of the first quarter.

Dixie State hit two free-throws to start the second quarter but would not make a field goal throughout the ten minute span. After the free-throws Siemons hit a three-pointer to get the Mavericks rolling on a 19-2 run that would take them into the locker room with a 37-18 lead.

The Mavericks had their best shooting percentage of the game coming out of the locker room and shooting 61.5 percent from the field and making eight field goals. Eight of McNicol's ten points came in the third quarter and Siemons hit two three-pointers to give the Mavericks their largest lead of the game 56-32 entering the final stretch of the game.

The Mavericks were outscored 10-9 during the fourth quarter but Dixie and the Mavs reached a final score of 65-42.

Tomorrow Night

After Friday night's RMAC contests the Mavericks and Westminster continued to be the only undefeated teams in conference play. This two teams will meet Saturday night in Brownson Arena at 5:30 pm.
