DURANGO, Colo – The Mavericks improved to 14-1 and 11-0 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play after defeating Fort Lewis College 61-51 on Saturday night in Whalen Gymnasium. The Skyhawks fell to 7-10 and 3-8 in conference.
The Mavericks shot 40.8 percent (10-of-25) from the field and 28.0 percent (7-of-25) from three-point range. They also made 14 free throws out of 18 attempts (77.8 percent). The Mavericks defense limited the Skyhawks to just 38.1 percent (16-of-42) from the field and 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from the three-point line. They struggled from the free throw line shooting 59.3 percent (16-of-27).
Senior Jaylyn Duran led the Mavericks in scoring for the twelfth time this season. She recorded 26 points (11-of-21 FG) and grabbed four rebounds to lead the Mavericks to their thirteenth straight win. Kylyn Rigsbsy shot 100.0 percent from the free throw line making all four attempts and totaled nine points for the Mavs. Sydni Brandon led the Mavericks in rebounds with five and scored seven points.
The Mavs and Skyhawks exchanged multiple baskets and reached a 9-9 tied ball game with 1:31 remaining in the first quarter before the Skyhawks hit five straight points to hold a 14-9 lead over the Mavericks at the end of the first quarter.
The Mavericks regained the lead by hitting back-to-back three pointers from Katrina Chandler and Jaylyn Duran to put the Mavs up 18-17 with 8:08 remaining in the second quarter. After this the score was tied twice and the game was deadlocked 28-28 at halftime.
During the third quarter the game was tied three times but the Mavericks had the final say heading into the final quarter as Duran hit a jumper to put Mesa up 46-44.
Duran continued to score for the Mavericks as she hit a three to open up the fourth quarter. The Skyhawks answered back with five straight points to tie the game 49-49. From this point on the Mavericks went on a 12-3 run to close out the game 61-52. The Mavericks made four straight free throws with under ten seconds remaining to secure their win.
The Mavericks defense caused 23 turnovers and scored 22 points off of those turnovers.

The Mavericks will return home next weekend to the friendly confines of Brownson Arena where they own a perfect 6-0 record to face off Dixie State and Westminster. The Griffins of Westminster are the only other undefeated team in the RMAC. This highly anticipated match will take place Saturday night at 5:30 pm.
