ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball program picked up their tenth conference win Friday night against Adams State University by a score of 59-49. They are now 13-1 overall and are currently on a twelve game winning streak and remain on top of the RMAC standings. The Mavs were led by Sydni Brandon who recorded a career high 15 points. She was 100.0 percent from the field (4-of-4) and made 7-of-8 free throws. Karina Brandon (10 pts) and Kelsey Siemons (12 pts) joined Sydni Brandon in double-digit scoring.
The Mavericks shot 47.9 percent (23-of-48) from the field, and 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from three. Colorado Mesa shot 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the charity stripe and ended the game with 27 total rebounds.
For the Grizzlies, Zakiya Beckles led the way with 16 points and Ki'asha Harris grabbed eight rebounds. ASU shot 37.8 percent (17-of-45) from the field, 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from three and 100.0 percent (8-of-8) from the free throw line.
The Mavericks and the Grizzlies battled back-and-fourth during the opening plays of the game and were tied 9-9 at the first media timeout. After this break the Mavericks hit three treys and put up a 20-14 lead after the first ten minutes. Jaylyn Duran knocked down the first one followed by back-to-back threes from Siemons.
Siemons continued her sharp shooting by knocking down another three-pointer to start the second quarter. The Mavericks outscored the Grizzlies 11-8 during this ten minute span and entered the locker room with a 31-22 lead. Throughout the first half the Mavs defense limited the Grizzlies to just 31.8 percent shooting (7-of-22).
Sydni Brandon scored the opening basket of the second half which was followed up with a layup from Duran for a quick four point swing in favor of the Mavericks. Starting at the 3:57 tick in the third quarter with a layup from Natalie Bartle the Mavericks went on a 13-1 run that lasted till the 7:43 mark in the fourth quarter. From then on the Grizzlies went on 12-2 run and grabbed three offensive rebounds to close in on the Mavericks lead 55-49. The Mavericks fell short of the Grizzlies during the fourth quarter 16-17 but had put in enough work in prior and were able to walk out of Plachy Hall Gym with a 59-49 win over Adams State.
Tomorrow Night
The Mavericks will face Fort Lewis College in Whalen, Gymnasium tomorrow night. The game will tipoff at 5:30 pm. The Skyhawks were defeated by Western State 64-54 in Friday night's RMAC contest.
