Mavs Win In Overtime

GRAND JUNCTION, COLO- The Colorado Mesa University men's soccer team found their first win of the 2018 season Thursday night at Walker Field. The Maverick's hosted Eastern New Mexico who was previously been undefeated. Chris Boyd ended the Greyhound's win streak when he found the net early in overtime. Overtime only lasted three minutes before the Mavericks decided to end the game.

Recap

This win did not come easy, the Mavericks battled back from being down early in the second half. They scored a goal after being down and then scored another one in overtime.

Briley Guarneri got the start as goalkeeper for the Mavericks and Logan Miears was awarded the start as goalkeeper for the Greyhounds.

Chris Boyd and James McGhee both took shots early in the first half but were rewarded nothing for their effort. Shortly following this Tristan Widic took a shot that was blocked. The Mavericks maintained control of offense most of the first half. By the end of the match the Mavericks outshot the Greyhounds 19 to five.

Eastern New Mexico and the Mavericks were both scoreless entering the second half.

Colorado Mesa committed a foul in the 52nd minute that resulted in a penalty kick. Aderi Arthur-Dede now was face to face with the RMAC Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year. Arthur-Dede put one past Guarneri when he shot right and Guarneri fell left. The Greyhounds were now up 1-0.

Colorado Mesa continued to take shots and attempt to tie the game. More than five Mavericks looked to tie the game but their shots resulted in no net. It wasn't until Kevin Del Mazo took a corner kick and found James McGhee who then completed a goal when he kicked the ball in backwards with his back facing the goal. This is McGhees second goal of the season.

Yellow cards were distributed to both teams at different times following this goal and no other shots were attempted. The two teams entered overtime with one goal each to their name.

Emotions running high the Mavericks had a couple missed opportunities to find a goal but did not give up. In the 91st minute Guarneri punted the ball almost the entire length of the field hoping to find McGhee but this lead to the Greyhounds goalie intercepting it and stopping the momentum.

The Mavericks were given another opportunity and this time they took advantage. Derrick Eberling found an open Chris Boyd in the midst of Greyhound defenders. The Greyhounds goalkeeper was close to the action but not quick enough for the junior from Arizona. Boyd recorded his first goal of the 2018 season.

 Next up for the Mavericks

The Mavericks are now 1-0-1 and have yet to play a match without overtime. Colorado Mesa will continue their home stand this Saturday when they take on Northwest Nazarene. This game is set to take place on Walker Field at noon.
