GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 14 Colorado Mesa football team was outscored 24-10 in the second half in a 38-34 loss to Chadron State in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action at Stocker Stadium on Saturday (Sept. 22). The loss snaps a three-game win streak for the Mavericks against Chadron State.
Colorado Mesa (3-1, 2-1 RMAC) took a 24-14 halftime lead after quarterback
Eystin Salum threw all three of his touchdown passes in the first half of action.
On the first play from scrimmage, Salum hit
Peter Anderson for a 75-yard touchdown pass to give the Mavericks a 7-0 lead. Both Anderson and Salum would have career days for the Mavericks.
Anderson finished with a pair of career-highs with 11 catches for 266 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His 266 yards is more than what Anderson had in his first three games this season.
The Mavericks had a chance to go-ahead on a last second drive but an
Eystin Salum pass into the end-zone was intercepted by Tyree Fryar, thwarting the Colorado Mesa threat.
Salum finished the game 22-of-35 for 352 yards and three touchdown passes. It was the senior's first 300-yard passing game of his career.
Freshman
Pailate Makakona was the Mavericks leading rusher on the day. Makakona toted the ball 15 times for 73 yards, averaging 4.9 yards per carry.
Chadron State wouldn't be stopped on the day. The Eagles churned up 645 yards of total offense that included 409 yards passing from Dalton Holst and 118 yards rushing by Stevann Brown.
Senior linebacker
Tom Saager tied for the game-high with 12 tackles and a pass break-up.
Chance Drake and
Pharoah Davis each finished with a sack. Davis also forced a fumble, picked it up and scampered 35 yards to setup a Colorado Mesa touchdown.
The Mavericks have another tall task next week as they head to Golden to take on nationally ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers. Mines defeated New Mexico Highlands on Saturday 43-14.

Brett Ojiyi tragically lost his life on Friday evening.
