Mavericks Start RMAC Play with a Draw

The Mavericks tied for the second time this season

DURANGO, COLO. - The Maverick's first game of the 2018 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference ended in a draw against Fort Lewis College. Despite the high scoring game neither the Mavericks nor the Skyhawks found a win. After 110 minutes the match ended 3-3. The Mavericks are now 2-0-2.

Recap

Miguel Alaniz started as goalkeeper for the Mavericks for the first time this season. Ventura Salcido found his place in the starting line up as goalkeeper for the Skyhawks.

The Skyhawks were quick to score against the Maverick's defense. Only three minutes into the game FLC's Coleman Kane recorded his first goal of the season. Bar Hazut was awarded the assist on this play.

Connor Lowdermilk responded quickly with a shot attempt of his own but would not find the net with his shot being too wide. The Maverick's 6'4'' forward Lawan Abary answered the Skyhawks goal ten minutes later. James McGhee lead Abary with a perfect pass to be able to net the goal. This is back-to-back games Abary has netted a goal and he wasn't done yet.

Abary recorded another goal in the middle of the second half. In the 73rd minute Nick Rizzo passed to Abary in front of the box where he then redirected the ball to put it right past the Skyhawk's goalkeeper. This is Abary's third goal of the season and only his second game on the year.

In the 79th minute the Mavericks made a mistake that cost them their 2- 1 lead. CMU committed a foul that resulted in a penalty kick and midfielder Nicholas Perez took the penalty kick for the Skyhawks. Alaniz made a save that bounced off his hands into the foot of another Mav that resulted in an own goal. With this goal the Skyhawks tied the Mavericks 2-2.

Within the same minute the Mavericks also got an opportunity at a penalty kick. Kevin Del Mazo took advantage of this opportunity and netted his first goal of the season. The Mavericks now led 3-2.

Marshall Metzger answered this goal with a goal of his own in the 85th minute that forced the game to enter overtime.

James McGhee and Chris Boyd each took a shot in the first overtime but were not successful. Connor Lowdermilk took two shots in the final seconds of the second over time but none resulted in a goal.

The Skyhawks and the Mavericks called it a draw after 110 minutes of actions.
