GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 14 Colorado Mesa baseball team completed a doubleheader sweep of the MSU Denver Roadrunners on Saturday at Suplizio Field. With the sweep, the Mavericks clinched the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship for the seventh straight season and for the 25
th time overall.
In game one of the day,
JJ Carr's sixth inning two-run home run helped secure the 5-2 win for the Mavericks in their first game of the day.
Colorado Mesa led 3-2 before Carr hit his third home run of the season. The senior finished the game 2-for-3 with three runs driven in and a run scored.
Hunter Douglas and
John Ballard each had multi-hit games as well.
Reagan Todd earned the win on the mound after throwing six of the seven innings. Todd (6-1) allowed just two runs (one earned) on four hits, one walk and struck out six.
Closer
AJ Landis came on and collected his fourth save of the season. Landis struck out two in his lone inning of work.
In the night cap, senior
Chris Ramirez pitched a complete game in the 7-1 win over the Roadrunners.
Ramirez (5-2) allowed one run on three hits, walked four and struck out six in the win. The Oxnard, Calif. native retired six of the final seven batters he faced.
Colorado Mesa exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with the Mavericks benefitting from three MSU Denver errors in the inning.
Garrett Ball and Douglas had multi-hit games while
Dominic DeMarco delivered a pinch-hit solo home run in the sixth inning of the game.
The Mavericks moved their record to 35-13 on the season and 26-9 in the Rocky Mountain Athleitc Conference while MSU Denver now has a 22-25 overall record and 18-5 conference mark.
The Mavericks will close out the regular season with a single nine-inning game against the Roadrunners at Noon over at Suplizio Field. The RMAC Tournament will begin on Wednesday May 9.
