NCAA TOURNAMENT
Colorado Mesa is making their 18th trip to the NCAA Tournament and 10th trip in a row. The Mavericks have qualified for the NCAA Division II World Series three times including a National Runner-up finish in 2014 and a trip to the Final Four last season. Colorado Mesa and Southern Arkansas are the lone teams in the national field that dropped their opening game of their respective conference tournaments but went on to win them.
THE PEN
The Maverick bullpen got some work during the RMAC Tournament. Freshman
Frankie Fitzgerald was in the spotlight in maybe the biggest spot during the tournament. Clinging to a one-run lead, the Las Vegas Native faced the teeth of the Oredigger order including RMAC Player of the Year Mikey Gangwish, and earned the hold. Fitzgerald was named to the All-Tournament team after earning two saves and striking out seven while allowing just two hits.
VS RANKED OPPONENTS
Colorado Mesa is 12-4 against opponents ranked in the top 30 of the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper rankings. They went 5-1 against Colorado School of Mines while they were ranked and had a series sweep over Dixie State while they were ranked in the early portion of the schedule.
HISTORY WITH THE JAVELINAS
Texas A&M-Kingsville is the lone team in the NCAA South Central Regional field the Mavericks have a losing record against at 1-3. The Mavericks lone win over the Javelinas came in the 2014 NCAA South Central Regional in Grand Junction, a 7-6 win at Suplizio Field.Â
800
In game one of the UCCS series, head coach
Chris Hanks won his 800th game as the skipper of Colorado Mesa University. Hanks' first win came on February 11, 1999, a 9-6 win over Division I Southern Utah in St. George, Utah.Â
50
The Mavericks set a program record a year ago by going 50-12 during the 2017 campaign. The 50 wins was a program first and ending up leading the nation in wins. The 50th win may not have come against a grander opponent in top ranked Delta State in the NCAA Division II World Series.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
After winning the RMAC Tournament, Colorado Mesa jumped up to No. 7 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper coach's poll and sit as the highest ranked team in the South Central Regional. The Perfect Game and NCBWA polls have not yet been released.
THE SKIPPER
Head coach
Chris Hanks enters his 20th season guiding the Mavericks and has an impressive 828-342 record, most in program history. In 2017, he guided the Mavericks to their third NCAA Division II World Series and their ninth straight NCAA Tournament.
