Cook Scores Five to Lead Mavericks

Colorado Mesa University was out on the road on Sunday afternoon taking on the Skyhawks of Fort Lewis College (FLC). The Mavericks were hoping to walk in and get their eighth win of the season, and they did just that as the team walked out of Durango with a 13-11 victory.

It was a close game throughout the majority of the afternoon. FLC jumped out to an early 2-1 lead before the Mavericks were able to rattle off three in a row to get the 4-2 lead with 13 minutes to go in the first half. The teams traded goals over the remaining time, allowing CMU to take in a 6-4 lead to the locker room.

In the second half, the Mavericks opened up their lead to start. They scored four of the first five goals to push their lead up to five with 22 minutes to go in regulation. The Skyhawks were not going to go away easily however, as they went on to score five of the next six to cut the lead down to 11-10 with just under 12 minutes remaining. Goals by Amanda Geary and Jessica Cook sealed the win for CMU over the next five minutes.

Despite coming away with the victory, the Mavericks were outshot 33-25 on the afternoon, which also included 22 team turnovers.

Cook led the team for a majority of the afternoon, not only scoring one of the game sealing goals, but she led the game with seven total points. Finishing the afternoon with five goals and two assists. The seven points gives Cook 206 career points with the Mavericks (162 goals and 44 assists).

Olivia Hayden, Marissa Leonardi and Geary all finished with two goals apiece as well for CMU.

Lula Mitchell was in goal, getting her eighth win of the season. She finished the game with 12 saves, which is her second most in a game this season.

The win moves the Mavericks to 8-2 overall on the year and 5-2 in the conference. Next up is a matchup against Westminster at home on Saturday. The match is set for 1 p.m. at Walker Field.
