When the Mavericks and the Griffins met for the first time this season, Colorado Mesa University snuck out of Salt Lake City with a narrow 15-14 victory. In the second meeting, it was the complete opposite with the Mavericks coming away with a 13-point victory on Saturday afternoon 20-7.
CMU's offense opened up the game with an offense that was looking to score, and score a lot. The Mavericks scored the first four goals on the afternoon, all in less than three minutes. The Griffins were able to stop the bleeding at the 26:26 mark to cut the lead down to 4-1. CMU would counter their score with two more of their own, followed by another two Westminster scores to make it 6-3 with 15:33 to play in the first half.
Next up for the Mavericks was arguably the best goal of the season for CMU. After cutting in front of the net,
Lindsi Peters received a pass from
Olivia Hayden. Peters, with the defender on her front side, then slung the ball behind her head and into the top left corner of the net past the Griffin's goalie. The score got the crowd up on their feet, as well as sparked a run for the Mavericks.
Including the Peters score, the Mavericks went on a 14-2 scoring run to take a 20-5 lead with 3:59 remaining in the game. Two final goals by the Griffins cut the final score to 20-7.
As a team the Mavericks offense was all over the place, putting up a total of 39 shots on the afternoon, to the Griffins 19. The Mavericks were able to capitalize on 18 Griffins turnovers on the afternoon to help them score their second most goals in a game this season.
Jessica Cook finished with a game high five-points on the afternoon, followed by Hayden who finished with four. Behind them, three Mavericks finished with three points a piece, followed by two with two and eight with one.
Lula Mitchell was in goal for the Mavericks once again, and she received her ninth win of the season. She finished with seven saves on the afternoon.
The win moves CMU to 9-2 overall and 6-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. CMU will now go on the road for two games next weekend against Regis University and CSU-Pueblo.
