TUCSON, Ariz.— The Colorado Mesa University Beach Volleyball team began their 4-match weekend at the University of Arizona's Wildcat Spring Challenge on Friday here at Bear Down Beach, falling to both 17
th-ranked Stetson and Arizona State, which is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Collegiate Beach Poll.
Both losses were by 5-0 scores although the Mavericks' duo of
Hana Peterman and
Megan Gianinetti claimed a set in the No. 2 match against Arizona State before falling 16-14 in a tight third set.
Peterman and Gianninetti, who are tied for second on the Maverick team in wins this season, dropped the first set to the Sun Devils' Frances Giedraitis and Samantha Plaster 21-17 but rallied to take the second by a 21-18 score.
The Mavericks, now 3-13, also had a few other close calls, most notably from
Taylor Woods and
Katie Scherr in the No. 1 match against the Stetson Hatters, who improved to 21-6 with that win before seeing a 10-match winning streak snapped with later losses to Arizona and California. Woods and Scherr fell 21-18, 21-19 to Stetson's top pair in Sammee Thomas and Darby Dunn.
CMU will contest two more matches in the 5-team event on Saturday facing the 15th-ranked hosts at 9:30 am. local time (10:30 MDT) and No. 14 California right after at 11 a.m. (Noon MDT). Both matches can be seen on Pac-12 Network.
