GOLDEN, Colo. –
In game one, Colorado Mesa capitalized on a pair of big innings on their way to an 11-5 win over Colorado School of Mines.
Both teams stranded the bases loaded in the first. The Orediggers had the bases loaded and nobody out but a line out and a fly out, double off killed the threat.
The Mavericks scored four runs in the second inning highlighted by back-to-back jacks by
Tyler Sandoval and
JJ Carr.
CMU would add six in the fifth innings with a two-run double by
John Ballard the highlight of the inning.
Sandoval wasn't done either as he hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning for the second of the game and third of the season. The junior finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs and two runs driven in.
Reagan Todd earned the win on the mound. Todd (3-1) allowed three runs, on three hits, walked five and struck out six after throwing 110 pitches. He retired eight batters in a row after surrendering the bases loaded with nobody out.
In game two, Colorado Mesa trailed 6-0 after four innings of action but came from behind to claim a 7-6 win over the Orediggers to sweep Saturday's action.
Stubbings put the Mavericks on the board in the top of the fifth by belting his team leading seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot that cut the lead to 6-2.
The freshman wasn't done putting his stamp on this game either. Stubbings sparked a five run sixth inning capped by a bases clearing double that gave the Mavericks the lead for good.
Colorado School of Mines threatened in the ninth inning getting the tying run to third before
Nick Borowski got a strikeout and induced a groundball to a fully laid out
Zach McLeod that made the out at first base.
Stubbings finished the game 2-for-3 with five runs driven in.
Garrett Ball was the only other Maverick with a multi-hit game.
Tanner Herdt earned the win in relief, pitching 1.2 innings and allowed just two hits.
Nick Borowski earned the save getting the final two outs of the game.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Mavericks and Orediggers are tied atop the RMAC Standings with matching 22-9 conference records.
The two teams will complete the series with a single game at Noon.
