Beach Volleyball squad to close out 2018 at home

Mavs to face CC Club Team, CNCC on Saturday

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Hot off winning the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Sand 2's Championships in dominating fashion, the Colorado Mesa University Beach Volleyball team will complete the 2018 season with their only home competition of the campaign.

The Mavericks will host the Colorado College Club Team and Colorado Northwestern Community College in a tri-dual on the CMU Sand Courts south of the Maverick Pavillion.  The Mavericks will take on the CC Tigers to begin the day at 10 a.m. and then face CNCC at 12:30 p.m.  The two visiting teams will square off in between at 11:30 a.m.

The Mavericks were an impressive 39-15 at last Saturday's tournament in Broomfield, Colo. as all seven of their pairings advanced out of the pool play before taking home the top three places en-route to a repeat team title with 675 points.    More than half (8) of CMU's losses came against teammates in the double-elimination bracket portion of the day.

The tandem of Katie Scherr and Taylor Woods went undefeated to win the competition, which included a total of 32 duos from CMU and six rival Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference indoor volleyball programs, most of whom were wrapping up the spring non-championship portion of the year on the sand.

Scherr and Woods a team-best 12-13 overall this year and have been playing in the No. 1 position throughout the campaign.

They defeated No. 2 duo Megan Gianinetti and Hana Peterman, who went 8-1 throughout the day, in the final while Ashton Reese and Kassidi Day took third place while going 6-2.

Now, the Mavericks will turn their attention back to the regular dual meet format against the Tigers and Spartans.

CC's squad is mostly made up of players from the Tigers' varsity indoor squad that was ranked No. 1 in the nation heading into the NCAA Division III Tournament.  The Tigers advanced to the third round of that tournament and capped another strong season with a 33-2 record.

Meanwhile, CNCC will be coming to Grand Junction for the second straight year with a crew of their indoor players as well.  The Mavericks defeated the Spartans 5-0 in an Apr. 24 dual in 2017.
