Women's Lax's Strong Second Half Gives them the Win

Colorado Mesa University traveled down to Pueblo, Colo. for their final road regular season game of the year. The Mavericks were looking to make it double digit wins for the third consecutive season. And CMU was able to do just that with a 17-13 victory over CSU-Pueblo (CSUP).

It was a back and forth affair throughout the first half of the contest. The Mavericks were able to jump out to a 5-2 lead thanks to back to back Olivia Hayden goals, but the Thunderwolves stormed back with three goals in under three minutes to tie the game back up at five all. Both teams would then trade three more goals apiece in order to send the game into halftime all knotted up at 8-8.

Through the first 13 minutes of the second half it was still a tight contest between these two squads. The Mavericks were leading 12-11 with 17:08 to play in regulation. The next 10 minutes however proved to be the deciding factor on Sunday's game. The Mavericks went on a 4-0 run to push their lead up to 16-11 with just over seven minutes to play. The Thunderwolves would try to fight back, scoring two more times, but it was the Mavericks game to win in the end.

As a team the Mavericks outshot CSUP 47-27 on the afternoon, which included making the Thunderwolves goalie finish with 19 saves. Defensively CMU was all over the game as well, forcing the Thunderwolves to commit 31 turnovers on the day.

Jessica Cook had a monster day for the Mavericks, finishing with five goals and one assist to give her a game high six points. Danielle Simpson was second on the team with a hat trick as well.

Hayden finished with two goals in the contest, which gives her 101 career goals with CMU. Another career mark was made in this game as well with Lindsi Peters hitting the 100 career points mark thanks to her two-point outing.

Lula Mitchell got herself her 10th win of the season in the Mavericks victory. She finished the game with eight saves.

With the win the Mavericks sit at 10-3 on the year overall and 6-2 in the RMAC. They will play their final regular season contest at home against Adams State University on Friday. This will be senior night as well for CMU.
