GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa's
Kyle Leahy and Regis' Brad Thoutt locked in a pitcher's duel in the game one of the four game series between the two teams. Leahy and the Mavericks prevailed in the game 2-1 over the Rangers at Suplizio Field.
Leahy (5-1) allowed one run on six hits, walked two and struck out seven in the complete game effort. The junior retired the first seven batters he faced before strung together a pair of free passes and an infield single to score their first run.
Regis' Thoutt was equally impressive. He allowed two runs on five hits, walked five and struck out 12 in seven innings of work.
The Mavericks scored their first run on a double by
Zach McLeod that drove in
Jordan Stubbings in the fourth inning. The run knotted the game at 1-1 after four innings.
The go-ahead run came in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single by
JJ Carr that scored
Dominic DeMarco from second after a Ranger error in right field allowed him to score.
Stubbings and Carr both had two hits for the Mavericks.
Colorado Mesa moves to 25-10 on the season and 15-6 in the conference while Regis falls to 20-18 and 12-12 in the RMAC.
The two teams will continue the series tomorrow afternoon at 1pm with a doubleheader.
