GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Junior right hander
Kyle Leahy struck out a career-high 17 UCCS Mountain Lions in a 2-0 victory for Colorado Mesa on Friday afternoon at Suplizio Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Leahy pitched the complete game shutout and allowed just four hits in the game. The Boulder native's only trouble came in the second inning where he allowed the first two runners to reach. A sacrifice bunt got the runners two second and third but that was followed by an infield pop-up and a strikeout to end the threat.
He is now 3-0 on the season and lowered his season ERA to 3.21.
The Mavericks scored their two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Tyler Sandoval delivered a two-run double to left center that scored
Caleb Farmer and
Zach McLeod.
Farmer finished the game with two hits.
The win was a milestone for head coach
Chris Hanks as it was his 800
th career win with all of them coming in a Maverick uniform. Hanks is in his 20
th season at the helm of Colorado Mesa with an all-time record of 800-333, a winning percentage of .706.
Hanks' first win of his career came on February 11, 1999, a 9-6 win over Division I Southern Utah in St. George, Utah.
Colorado Mesa is now 12-5 on the season and 4-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference while UCCS fell to 9-8, 3-2 in the conference.
The Mavericks and Mountain Lions will square off in a doubleheader at Suplizio Field tomorrow beginning at 1pm.
