LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The No. 5 Colorado Mesa baseball team split a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference doubleheader with the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys on Friday afternoon at Brandt Field.
In the opening game, New Mexico Highlands' Garrett Hammer delivered a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Cowboys the 5-4 win.
The two teams entered the seventh inning in a 3-3 tie.
Colorado Mesa's
Tyler Sandoval drew a bases-loaded walk, forcing in
Josh Shapiro from third base to give the Mavericks the short lived 4-3 lead.
Highlands' Justin DeHoog led off the bottom of the seventh with a game-tying solo home run to right center field before Hammer's walk-off.
Caleb Farmer had three hits for the Mavericks including a double.
AJ Landis took the loss on the mound allowing one run on two hits.
In the night cap, Colorado Mesa used a four run third inning to take a 7-1 win over the Cowboys.
The 3-4-5 hitters for Colorado Mesa did all the damage in the game as they combined for five hits, three runs and accounted for all seven runs driven in.
Caleb Farmer, the Mavericks No. 3 hitter, went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and a double while
Jordan Stubbings, the Mavericks No. 4 hitter, was 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs driven in.
Dominic DeMarco, batting fifth today, went 2-for-4 with a home run.
Junior
Kyle Leahy made his normal Friday start, even though it was game three of the series earned the win on the mound. Leahy (4-0) allowed just one run on seven hits but didn't walk anyone or strike anyone out in his six innings of work.
The Cowboys had traffic on the bases in every inning but could only muster one run. The lone 1-2-3 inning for Leahy came in his last inning of work.
Colorado Mesa moved its record to 21-7 on the season.
The two teams will conclude their series with a single nine inning game on Saturday beginning at Noon.
