Maverick's Offense Lights Up for 23 Goals in Win

It was a scoring barrage on Thursday afternoon, with the Mavericks surpassing 20 goals for the first time this season. UCCS was unable to hang with Colorado Mesa University for a majority of the game, resulting in a 23-8 win for CMU.

The Mavericks and Mountain Lions opened up the scoring with goals in the first minute of action. However, CMU would then go on to score nine of the next 11 goals to take a 10-3 lead with over half of the first half to play. The Mountain Lions were then able to claw within five, scoring the next two goals, but CMU quickly vaulted that lead back up to eight at 14-6 to close out the first half of action.

In the second half, the Mavericks closed the game scoring seven of the final eight goals to increase their lead to 15 on the afternoon.

Despite the gap in the final score, CMU only finished with eight more shots in the game (33-25) than the Mountain Lions. The Mavericks also finished with more turnovers in the contest than UCCS when it was all said and done (14-13).

Four Mavericks finished with four or more points in the contest, led by Danielle Simpson who had six points thanks to four goals and two assists. The others were Olivia Hayden (5), Lindsi Peters (4) and Kenzie Blackwell (4).

Lula Mitchell was in goal for CMU, getting her seventh win of the season. She finished the game collecting eight saves.

With the win the Mavericks move to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in the conference. CMU will take on No. 12 Regis University on Saturday for a battle for second place in the RMAC. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Walker Field.
