LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The No. 5 Colorado Mesa baseball team opened up its second straight road trip with a 6-1 victory over the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys on Thursday afternoon at Brandt Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Both teams scored once in the first inning but that would be all the Cowboys would get in the game.
Senior lefty
Chris Ramirez got the game one start for the first time in his career and didn't disappoint. Ramirez (3-1) allowed just the one run on four hits, walked three and struck out four in eight innings of work.
Will Dixon made his first collegiate appearance on the mound to finish the game out. Dixon faced three batters and induced a pair of fly outs and a ground out.
The Mavericks took the lead for good in the top half of the fifth inning. With two outs, left fielder
Hunter Douglas stepped to the plate and delivered his third home run of the season giving the Mavericks a 2-1 lead.
Colorado Mesa tacked on three runs in the seventh inning highlighted by a leadoff double by
Zach McLeod and an RBI single by
Tyler Sandoval to make it 6-1.
McLeod finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored while Sandoval also finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two runs driven in.
Reagan Todd was the only other Maverick with a multi-hit game. Todd delivered a RBI double in the first inning to put the Mavericks on the board and went 2-for-4 with a run scored and the RBI.
Colorado Mesa moves its record to 20-6 on the season and 11-2 in the RMAC while New Mexico Highlands falls to 8-21 overall and 4-13 in the conference.
The two teams will continue their Easter week series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
