Mavs dominate Bison in RMAC opener

CMU remains perfect at 4-0

SHAWNEE, Okla.— Olivia Hayden and Hannah Payton each recorded hat-tricks while Lindsi Peters finished with a goal and four assists as the Colorado Mesa University women's lacrosse team remained unbeaten with a dominating 19-1 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win over Oklahoma Baptist University on Monday evening.

The Mavericks, who had 13 different goal scorers, improved to 4-0 on the year, with all four of their victories coming against RMAC foes.  However, Monday's victory was their first official RMAC win of the season after earlier non-conference games against Fort Lewis, Adams State and Westminster, teams they will face later in the year in contests that will count in the RMAC standings.

Against the Bison (2-4, 0-2 RMAC), the Mavericks raced to an early 4-0 lead in the first 5:12 of the evening with goals from Marissa Leonardi, Amanda Geary, Marcy Koch and Jessica Cook and a pair of assists from Peters, which came on the Geary and Koch goals, spaced just 19 seconds apart.

The Bison then scored their only goal of the game from the stick of Breanna Wichert 22:39 left in the first half before the Mavericks scored each of the game's final 15 goals in the run-away victory.

CMU led 12-1 at the half and scored five of the final nine goals of the game on free position shots.

Hayden, who recorded her second hat-trick of the season after scoring seven goals in the season-opener against Fort Lewis, also finished Monday's win with six draw controls and was one of five Mavericks with three caused turnovers.

The Mavericks forced 30 turnovers overall.

Meanwhile, Payton tallied her second, third and fourth goals of the year and added an assist while picking up a pair of ground balls.

Lauren Delancellot and Koch also finished with two goals each to aid the cause.

Lula Mitchell picked up the win in goal for the Mavericks but needed to make just two saves as the Mavericks out-shot the Bison 38-11 overall while holding an impressive 31-3 edge in shots on goal.

The Mavericks continue their Midwestern spring break swing with RMAC games on Wednesday at Rockhurst (6-2, 3-1 RMAC) in Kansas City, Mo. and then play at No. 3 Lindenwood (8-0, 3-0 RMAC) in St. Charles, Mo. on Friday.
