Mavs take two more to complete weekend sweep

CMU remains perfect

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— After throwing a 14-strikeout no-hitter on Sunday, Colorado Mesa University junior pitcher McKenzie Surface allowed just one hit while striking out eight to record her second shutout of the series in a 8-0 Maverick softball win over visiting Chadron State College, capped by sixth-inning walk-off grand slam by AnnMarie Torres, here at the CMU Softball Stadium.

The Mavericks then banged out 10 hits and used two big innings to complete the doubleheader series sweep with a 7-1 victory in the final game of the 4-game set with the Eagles to remain perfect in 2018.

CMU, now 14-0 overall, allowed just two runs and nine hits in the entire series, the first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference one of the year.  The Eagles have now dropped nine straight while falling to 2-12 overall and 0-4 in the RMAC.

The Mavericks have also won 28 consecutive home games.

Game 1

Surface struck out the side in the top of the first before the Maverick jumped all over the Eagles with three runs in the bottom of the first.  Lead-off hitter Maggie Manwarren beat out an infield single and then stole second before moving to third on a Alexandria Dufour before scoring a wild pitch.

The Mavericks then extended the lead to 3-0 on a 2-run Eagle error.

Meanwhile, Surface retired eight straight before an Allie Mason single in the fifth that was wiped out by an unassisted double play by Dufour.

The Mavericks then put the game away via the run-rule as a 2-out single by Hailey Hinson followed by back-to-back Eagle errors allowed the Mavericks to load the bases.  Torres, who now has a team-high seven home runs this year, made them pay as she blasted out the grand slam to left to complete the win.

Surface allowed just three walks and five total baserunners while improving to 8-0 while Jessica Jarecki took her second loss of the weekend while falling to 1-7.  She also had eight strikeouts and also gave up four walks.  Only one of her eight runs allowed was earned.

Game 2

Neither team scored in the early stages before a 3-run bottom of the third put CMU in control.  The Mavericks had five hits in the inning, including three doubles.

Bailey Kleespies started the rally with one of those doubles and then moved to third on an Alexa Samuels bunt single.  Maggie Manwarren, who went 4-for-7 with three runs, then hit a 2-run double to put CMU on the board before Dufour traded places with yet another double, which made it 3-0.

Kellie Mrofcza also added an RBI single later in the inning.

Meanwhile, the Eagles left five runners on base in the first four innings before breaking through for a run on an Aspen Eubanks double in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 4-1.

However, the Mavericks pulled that run back thanks to a Dufour lead-off triple and Brooke Hodgson RBI single.

CMU also got two more runs on Tegan Woosley homer to center, her first of her collegiate career, which completed the scoring.

The Mavericks then brought in Kimbri Herring, who recorded five strikeouts in two innings of relief of Hodgson, the starter, while clearing their bench as 15 different players saw action in the final game of the series.  Hodgson improved to 3-0 while allowing just four walks and four hits in her five innings of work.

Megan Horn suffered the loss for the Eagles and fell to 1-4 after giving up nine hits and seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.

The Mavericks, who are currently ranked third nationally, will now be on the road for the next three weekends and 12 games, starting Saturday at Adams State (3-11), which had their RMAC-opening series at Black Hills State cancelled by weather.

Chadron State will return home to face New Mexico Highlands next weekend.
