Mavericks Close Out 2017-18 Season

Colorado Mesa University was in Las Vegas, N.M. for its final game of the 2017-18 season facing off against New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU). After going into halftime with a four-point lead, the Mavericks were unable to sustain it in the second half and fell to the Cowboys 98-84.

Connor Nichols and CJ Davis helped lead the Mavericks in the first half. They combined for 29 points on 11-17 shooting from the field in the first half alone. As a team CMU shot 65 percent from the field in the first half to the Cowboys 34 percent. However, 10 three-point makes in the half kept the Cowboys in it and were only down 47-43.

The Mavericks hot shooting wasn't able to continue in the second half, while the Cowboys caught fire. NMHU shot 62 percent in the second half and put up 55 points in the half.

Bench points was another key factor in the contest, with the Cowboys outscoring the Mavericks 37-9.

Nichols was the Mavericks leading scorer with 27 points to go along with seven boards on the night. In his final collegiate game, Davis finished with 21 points and six rebounds. He also nailed five treys from deep in the game. Damon Dubots was the other Maverick to finish in double digits with 21 points on the night.

CMU finishes the season with an 11-17 record overall and 7-15 conference record. As a team they finished the season with three more wins overall, but finished with the same conference record as the 2016-17 team.
