SPEARFISH, S.D. – Colorado Mesa was outscored by nine points in the second quarter and could never recover in a 60-54 loss to the Black Hills State Yellow Jackets at the Young Center in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women's basketball action on Saturday.
The Mavericks led 19-15 heading into the second quarter but was outscored 17-8 in the second quarter and fell behind 32-27 at half and never led after that. Colorado Mesa cut the lead to four with 3:56 to play after a jumper by
Ma'ata Epenisa to make it 58-54. The Mavericks wouldnt score again.
Colorado Mesa shot just 32.1 percent (17-for-53) from the field and a little over 31 percent (10-for-32) from beyond the arc while the Yellow Jackets shot 39.2 percent (20-for-51) from the field.
Erin Reichle led the Mavericks with 17 points with all her made field goals coming from beyond the three-point line. She pulled down five rebounds and handed out one assist.
Karina Brandon was the only other Maverick to reach double-digits with 11 points.
Yellow Jacket Rachel Erickson led all scorers with 19 points
Colorado Mesa remains in the seventh position in the conference with a 12-8 conference mark and 18-8 overall while Black Hills State remains in third place with a 14-6 RMAC record and 20-6 mark overall.
The Mavericks will play their final two games of the season next week when they travel to CSU-Pueblo and New Mexico Highlands.
